Using satellites to monitor wildfires



An August 2013 article from NASA titled, NASA 'Fire Towers' in Space Watch for Wildfires on the Rise, details the efforts being made to study fires from space and to study how climate change is impacting wildfires. According to NASA, instruments on Terra and Aqua, two of NASA’s Earth-observing satellites, have scanned the surface of our planet for over a decade to study fire’s role in land cover change, ecosystem processes and the global carbon cycle, allowing researchers to map characteristics of the global distribution of fires in remarkable detail.  A two minute video titled The Future of Fires summarizes NASA’s findings, which include the release of several animations that are also featured in the article: Potential Evaporation in North America Through 2100, and More Than a Decade of Fires.

Video: Soil Microbes, Permafrost and Global Warming

This 4 minute video adapted from KUAC-TV and the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks does a nice job of explaining how soil microbes in Arctic permafrost are contributing to the carbon cycle throughout the year and not just during the summer.  This video also describes how these microbes are part of a positive feedback loop: as more permafrost thaws, more microbes are active, releasing more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, accelerating warming - the role of shrubs and snow in this feedback loop is also addressed.

This teaching resources has been approved by the Climate Literacy and Energy Awareness Network and is accompanied by a background essay as well as discussion questions.

Ice Cores!

This lesson available from the COOL2.0 climate education website begins with a 10 minute TED video titled Inside an Antarctic time machine where science columnist Lee Hotz, describes a project at WAIS Divide, Antarctica, where a team is drilling into ten-thousand-year-old ice.  The video does a nice job of showing how the researchers live and work in the cold and snowy Antarctic.

The lesson then proceeds to a wet lab activity in which students use ice cores to collect evidence of past climates and a dry lab activity where students analyze data patterns from ice cores  from Antarctica and Greenland.

A Tour of the Cryosphere: Antarctica

NASA's A Tour of the Cryosphere is an animation that provides an overview of Earth's frozen surfaces using satellite observations and details the impact that recent cryospheric changes are making on our planet.

The 5 minute animation begins in Antarctica, showing some unique features of the Antarctic landscape found nowhere else on earth. Ice shelves, ice streams, glaciers, and the formation of massive icebergs can be seen clearly in the flyover of the Landsat Image Mosaic of Antarctica.

Still images of Antarctica, along with images from the collapse of the Larsen iceshelf are also available for download.

Climate Change Modules from the COMET Program

The COMET Program recently released three short modules relating to the impacts of climate change. Free registration is required in order to access these modules.  Each module takes between 15 and 30 minutes to complete and is available in both a video and print format.  The print version of each module includes figures that can be incorporated into Powerpoint presentations.
  1. "Climate Change and Regional Impacts": An overview of the different effects climate change has produced in different regions of the United States. In addition, the module presents information on how climate scientists use specialized models and statistical techniques to estimate how regional climates are likely to change in the future and what those projections currently are.
  2. "Climate Change and Extreme Weather": Discusses how a changing climate can also lead to changes in local extreme weather events. The role of natural variability is also explained, and the module discusses what changes scientists think are likely if greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise.
  3. "Climate Change and Sea Level Rise": Looks at how increasing temperatures due to climate change have affected sea level rise and what effects scientist expect in the future, given rising greenhouse gas emissions. The various mechanisms of sea level rise are discussed, as well as the tools and research used to study this topic. The module also discusses how countries and communities are preparing for future increases.
Most COMET modules use JavaScript and Adobe® Flash® for navigation, animation, and/or presentation of multimedia elements. Ensure that you have a browser updated to its latest version with JavaScript enabled and the latest version of the Adobe FlashPlayer installed.

New Video Series Summarizes the State of Climate Science Research

The National Resource Council (NRC) released a seven video series titled Climate Change: Lines of Evidence earlier this summer that provides a summary of the climate science research to date with emphasis on the role of remote sensing in studying climate and the use of data visualization to convey information about Earth's climate.
